A glorious decade has passed since the premiere of the iconic TV series The Vampire Diaries. With the wrap-up of its successful spinoff The Originals in 2018, the much-loved franchise has spawned a lasting legacy of love, family and magic to be continued in a thrilling new saga.
Legacies will pick up where the story left off two years after the finale of The Originals with 17-year-old Hope Mikaelson, the first vampire/werewolf/witch “tribrid” and daughter of Original vampire Klaus Mikaelson (which makes her a direct descendant of the first-ever vampires to roam the earth), attending the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted as she fights off unknown supernatural evils lurking at Mystic Falls. The institute is secretly a refuge for supernatural children founded by Caroline Forbes and Alaric Saltzman in honor of Stefan Salvatore after he sacrificed himself to save his brother Damon and beloved town in the series finale of The Vampire Diaries.
Unencumbered by its rich and chaotic history weaved in The Vampire Diaries universe, this new spinoff wants to set itself apart instead of becoming a humdrum rehashing of its parent series. As it offers a whimsical mix of novelty and nostalgia, we’re here to give you three reasons why you shouldn’t miss an episode of Legacies.
1.) New supernatural creatures
The all-new boarding school that used to be the home of the rambunctious Salvatore brothers will now serve as the humble abode and safe haven of the young overachievers of the underworld, so expect to encounter new kinds of supernatural creatures. Will they stir up some supernatural shenanigans or live together in peace as they fully embrace their non-human identities?
2.) New monster-of-the-week format
Legacies will follow a new monster-of-the-week format by introducing new creatures for the show’s protagonists to ward off. As revealed by TV producer Julie Plec, this unprecedented attempt of revamping the narrative structure is something she had always wanted to do since its predecessors. With this opportunity to embrace a more compelling plot, it’s exciting to think about all the ways our heroes will overcome the challenges they will face every episode. Buckle up for breakneck plot twists!
3.) The return of familiar faces
It’s no secret that longtime fan-favorite Alaric Saltzman will be a main character of the show as the headmaster of the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted, but considering The Vampire Diaries’ history of bringing the dead back to life, surely we will get to see more cameos of familiar faces. Matt Donovan will also come back as the new sheriff of Mystic Falls, along with world-travelling vampire hunter Jeremy Gilbert. While it’s exciting to see how this spinoff of a spinoff will introduce a whole new generation of brooding and diverse fresh blood, you can count on Legacies to never lose sight of its roots, so expect to see fun Easter eggs popping every now and then.
