The Clarksville native Maddie Poppe is officially the new American Idol! She is taking home $250,000, a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, and a recording contract with Hollywood Records.
Another thing that’s been made official in the grand finale is American Idol Top 2 Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie are a couple! While host Ryan Seacrest was introducing their duet performance Caleb then revealed that he is dating Maddie. They performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and as they started holding hands, the audience cheered them on. ETC found its new OTP in HutchPoppe!
As Maddie’s name was announced, she broke into tears and fell into Caleb’s arms. Her guitar was immediately given to perform her original track and winner’s single “Going Going Gone”. She joked, "I have to sing my song," as she tried to regain composure in between laughs and tears.
The star-studded finale of American Idol had judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie perform with the season's former contestants as well as superstars like Darius Rucker, Nick Jonas, and Patti LaBelle. Even Kermit the Frog graced the event and performed a duet with Maddie singing “Rainbow Connection". This is also the song that she performed during her Idol audition.
Back then, Maddie even had her hair in pigtails while singing that Muppet song. Her first performance truly made a mark to the judges and they often commented how much she has improved her vocal talent and grown in style. Lionel Richie told the 20-year-old singer last week, "The journey has been an amazing one."
Luke Bryan also told Maddie earlier in the season that her voice "feels timeless." But her biggest fan has always been Katy Perry, who told Maddie that she wants to hear a record of hers. "You're, like, 'I am Maddie Poppe and no one else. Whether I go Top 5 or No. 1, I'm Maddie Poppe,' and actually, that's a star," Perry said.
